Abstract According to Kant’s ethics, at least on one common interpretation, persons have a special worth or dignity that demands respect. But personhood is not coextensive with human life; for example, individuals can live in severe dementia after losing the capacities constitutive of personhood. Some philosophers, including David Velleman and Dennis Cooley, suggested living loss their might offend against Kantian once possessed. Cooley has even argued it morally required grounds those who realize they will lose as result (e.g. Alzheimer’s) hasten deaths commit suicide). This article specifies circumstances which post-personhood indeed involve an affront person was. However, contends, Kant implies neither nor permissible someone early stage Alzheimer’s death avoid such affront, if autonomously chosen do so. The adds ethical perspective debate physician-assisted dying, particular moral permissibility soon-to-be-demented ending lives.
